In a world that often prizes productivity over presence, many of us carry stress like an invisible weight. Reiki, the ancient practice of channeling Source or Universal energy, known as Rei, through life force energy, known as Ki, uses gentle touch and intention to support release, restoration, and balance.
What is fascinating is that modern neuroscience is beginning to explain why Reiki can feel so profoundly restorative.

Dr. Stephen Porges’ polyvagal theory shows us that the nervous system is wired to respond to cues of safety.
When we feel safe, the body can shift into the ventral vagal state, a state associated with calm, connection, and openness. Reiki creates these cues through gentle touch, soothing presence, and intentional energy flow.
My clients often describe feeling “seen” and “held tenderly,” which mirrors the nervous system’s natural response to safety.
When the body feels safe, it can soften. When the body softens, the mind often follows. This is one reason Reiki can feel so deeply calming for people who are carrying stress, emotional tension, or nervous system overwhelm.
During Reiki, many people move from the busy beta brainwave state, which is associated with alertness and problem solving, into slower alpha and theta states.
These are the same states often linked to meditation, creativity, and deep relaxation.
Theta waves are associated with emotional processing, memory reconsolidation, and inner insight. This may help explain why Reiki sessions often bring both peace and clarity. For some people, the experience is not only relaxing. It can also feel revealing, reflective, and emotionally meaningful.
Stress floods the body with cortisol and adrenaline, keeping us in fight or flight.
Reiki helps support regulation by encouraging the parasympathetic nervous system, the body’s natural rest and digest mode. This shift can help the body move out of survival patterns and into a more grounded state of restoration.
Studies on heart rate variability, also known as HRV, suggest that practices like Reiki may support coherence, meaning the heart and brain begin to work in greater harmony.
This coherence is linked to resilience, emotional balance, and overall wellbeing.

The nine points are arranged in a geometric figure called the Enneagram, symbolizing the dynamic relationships between types.
It is both a map of human behavior and a tool for transformation, helping individuals understand unconscious patterns and move toward integration.
Ancient Symbolism: The nine-pointed figure has appeared in mystical traditions, including early Christian mysticism and Sufi teachings, as a symbol of divine order and inner harmony.
Oscar Ichazo (1950s–60s): A Bolivian philosopher and spiritual teacher, Ichazo synthesized ancient wisdom with modern psychology, founding the Arica School. He introduced the Enneagram as a system for inner work and consciousness transformation.
Claudio Naranjo (1970s): A Chilean psychiatrist, Naranjo integrated Ichazo’s teachings with Western psychology, refining the Enneagram into the personality typology widely used today
